1. | After spotting Indiana 10 points, the Badgers put together perhaps their most impressive performance of the season so far, rolling over IU 45-17. Wisconsin ball was in full effect with UW having possession for nearly 40 minutes and fullback Alec Ingold scoring 3 TDs. Joe Ferguson came in clutch on defense with INTs on consecutive defensive plays early in the 4th quarter. Unfortunately the already extensive injury list got even longer with Chris Orr joining it once again, as well as our best WR Quintez Cephus. Not a position where we have a lot of depth. Next week UW hosts Iowa who is coming off a dominating win over OSU. This is an opportunity to get a quality win or a quality loss, which if TCU is any indication, is even better. Oh, right, we're Wisconsin, so either we knock Iowa out of the top 25 and still have played nobody or we lost to the one team we played all year and don't deserve to be ranked. pianobadger |
2. | The ongoing weird game saga at MSU continued with a 3.5 hour weather delay late in the second quarter. Prior to that time it was gearing up to be a straight up shoot-out with Penn State, but after the delay and halftime, the Spartan defense started to make plays, and Lewerke was let off leash. Posting his second 400 yard passing game in a row (and the third all time for MSU QBs), Lewerke is establishing himself as one of the best QBs in the B1G and has two years left after this season. The running game was still lacking, and the o-line continues to take bad penalties. We also have to thank the PSU receivers for a few gifts since our DBs got beat a few times only to have a pass dropped. Next up, a huge showdown with OSU in Columbus. Here's hoping for rain... FoxMcbowser42 |
3. | Another week, another WTF fourth quarter. Penn State came into Spartan Stadium in what most expected to be a win. A three hour weather delay put a damper on both teams, but the Spartans found a way to put together a win with a last second field goal. Penn State quarterback play had its ups and downs as McSorley threw for more than 300 yards, 3 touchdowns, and three drive killing interceptions. The Spartans held Barkley to just 63 yards on 14 carries. But despite the offensive woes, it was the defense that, I think, deserves this loss. Lewerke, at times, looked like JT Barrett finding hole after hole in the passing coverage and putting putting together impressive drives when they were needed most. It was ultimately the dumb roughing the passer penalty that renewed a Spartan drive to set up the winning field goal. Next up: the Lions take on a Rutgers squad that has renewed confidence over the last couple weeks. But, the Scarlet Kinghts will have their hands full as Franklin and company look to get the wheels back on the bus this Saturday in Beaver Stadium. 2ndHalfTeam |
4. | Well, shit. A lot of Buckeye fans talked about Iowa being a trap game going into the season, but I don't think anyone ever envisioned it being that bad. I mean seriously, 55 points?? For Iowa??? I don't think there was a single unit that played well. The Buckeyes playoff hopes are pretty much gone at this point, but the season can still be a success if we manage to win out and win the B1G. That won't be easy with Sparty and the MSU/OSU home field curse coming up this weekend. topher3003 |
5. | Holy shit. Holy shit! HOLY SHIT WHAT HAPPENED?!? I’m honestly still surprised and giddy. Amani Hooker got a Pick 6 on the first play of the game. Iowa pulled out some trickeration, which led to Nate Stanley throwing a TD with a guy wrapped around his ankles. He threw 5 TDs on the day: 4 to TEs and 1 to a FB. Oh, and Josh Jackson picked off Barrett three times, including this insane one-handed grab. This was a beatdown for the ages, and I still can’t really believe it. Iowa plays Wisconsin in Madison next week, looking to take down another Top 10 team and add to their trophy collection. trumpet_23 |
6. | That was a win Bo Schembechler would love! Michigan beat Minnesota 33-10 behind 371 rushing yards (10 YPC), as they outgained the Golden Gophers by 281 yards on the ground. It might have been an old-school Wolverines win but it was far from three yards and a cloud of dust. Michigan broke a 7-7 tie with a 77-yard touchdown run by Karan Higdon, with Chris Evans adding scoring scampers of 60 and 67 yards. The dynamic duo (co-Big Ten Offensive Players of the Week) combined for 391 yards, as Higdon (12.5 YPC) turned in his second 200-yard game in the past four weeks and Evans (14.7 YPC) rushed for a career-high 191 yards. It’s the second-straight game that two Michigan runners have topped the century mark. What made this effort even more impressive is they did it without right guard Michael Onwenu, who was playing as well as any of their offensive linemen in recent weeks, especially as a runner blocker. Filling in admirably was true freshman Cesar Ruiz, the center of the future. Minnesota is no pushover either, as they allowed 133 rushing yards per game coming in. The running game took the pressure off redshirt freshman Brandon Peters, who was making his first career start. Peters finished 8 of 13 for 56 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Sean McKeon caught a game-high three passes, including a 20-yard touchdown where he flashed some after the catch ability. Led by viper Khaleke Hudson the defense was dominant (Bronko Nagurski Defensive Player of the Week). The blitzing sophomore had 15 tackles, a Big-Ten record eight tackles for loss, including three sacks, and a forced fumble. Let those numbers sink in. That’s a solid month for most players. As a team, the Wolverines had 13 tackles for loss (-65 yards), including five sacks (-46 yards) as they held the Gophers to 164 yards of total offense (2.9 yards per play). The secondary kept Minnesota’s leading receiver Ty Johnson in check (season-low one catch). The one negative was penalties, as Michigan was flagged nine times for 85 yards, an on-going problem. 7. | Northwestern set an NCAA record for being the first team in history to win three back to back overtime games. While regulation wins would have been less stressful for fans, the team is now riding a three game winning streak against solid competition. Justin Jackson had another excellent game, moving up to 6th all time in B1G career rushing yards. The defense played another solid game as well, continuing to establish a pass rush and getting excellent linebacking help from Nate Hall and Paddy Fisher. Safeties Godwin Igwebuike and Kyle Quiero also deserve a lot of credit for standout performances. LeinadSpoon |
8. | Well at least the games are looking exciting again. I will still defend Tanner Lee as a good QB, despite one truly terrible decision against Northwestern. He just needs a better team around him, and we are simply not getting there. The fans want to cheer, and they did their part in OT, but the product on the field is killing us. In three OT games under Riley, Nebraska has now gained a total of zero yards on 9 plays. That says a lot about game management and coaching. At least the defense came to play a bit. This week we visit Minnesota in a fight for the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy, the one thing we have been able to look forward to all season. Nebraska_Actually |
9. | Purdue hit the four win mark for the first time since 2012, and ended their November losing streak at 17 with a 29-10 victory over Illinois Saturday. The game was a lot closer than the score line would have you believe; neither team was able to get much going until Purdue finally opened it up late in the fourth quarter. The story of the game, however, was that David Blough suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle on what looked like an obvious targeting. The refs--who were awful all day, and took turns screwing each team--initially called the targeting, but somehow overturned it on replay. 10. | The Scarlet Knights of Rutgers have finally established their identity on offense. It took most of the year to figure out, two-and-a-half QB's later, we now know the Knights are a run first offense with little care or regard for passing that tries to grind opposing defenses down, then pin the opposition on special teams, and let the defense go out there and make the opposition work for yardage with limited big plays. It's not pretty, but it's been working. Gio has proven himself to be a solid game manager, and servicable passer; with speedster and future 'Juwan Jamison' Raheem Blacksheer on the bench with an injury, Jerry Kill employed the thunder and thunder duo of Gus Edwards and Robert Martin; in the week after press conference, Kill joked "I wish we ran the ball more." The Rutgers special teams mostly shined, with Minnesota RS SR transfer Ryan Harte hitting a 50yd FG, alongside of excellent kick and punt coverage; however there was a muffed punt that gave the ball back to UMD and a shanked punt that gave UMD excellent field position. Defensively, the Knights were pretty good, with another pick 6 by DB Kiy Hyster. Fun fact: Kiy Hester now has more "receiving" touchdowns than all Rutgers WR's.. combined. However, with all of that said, the real star of the show was the 34k+ fans in an empty Rutgers stadium sustaining a loud ~5min boo after a blown false start penalty on 4th down that gave the Terrapins 1st and 10, instead of a 4th and 6. Rutgers plays the devil next week in hell. I felt like we needed two highlights this week, with one going to the crowd! (1) a shortend TV version of the boo (2) Kiy Hester pick 6. crustang |
11. | Even with a 3rd string QB and loss of a future NFL-er at DE, Maryland had continued to come out a step above the bottom tier of the B1G. In a game where Maryland led in both yards and turnovers, they found a way to lose. Blame can pretty much be spread across the board from an awful desperation heave across the field by Bort that led to an easy pick six early on, yet another QB injury leading to a walkon attempting (and nearly converting) a final game tying drive, an offensive line that gave up 4 sacks and 5 TFL’s, to a rush defense that looked porous against a fairly one dimensional offense and a defense that has allowed 50% conversions on 3rd down which ticked higher against one of the worst offenses in the P5. Maryland still took a lead into the 4th quarter and let it get away. All the excuses aside, the Terps should have won this game and failed to do so. It’s easy for Maryland fans to give up and wait for next year when we should be competing in the top half of the conference at last but right now it feels so far away. Wicked_UMD |
12. | There is not much to highlight this week about the Gophers. When the second offensive drive led to a touchdown it looked like this might be a game. Michigan then proceeded to break long run after long run, and absolutely shut down the Minnesota offense. The only highlight worth mentioning was when Merrick Jackson demolished Michigan QB Peters, and Michigan fans in the bar cried about it. Demry Croft is 19-54 over the last 3 games, and was sacked 5 times in this one. However, the blame can be shared, as our battered offensive line was overwhelmened all night long and our receivers could not seem to separate. These boys need to get hungry for a win with only Nebraska, Northwestern, and Wisconsin left on the schedule. kShnarsty |
